The Valleys of the Bernese Oberland walk provides an intimate look into a spectacular part of the Swiss Alps well away from the tour bus crowds visiting Switzerland's Greatest Alpine Hits. On most of the trails the vast majority of walkers I met were Swiss, and on many of the walks even Swiss walkers were few and far between. I opted for extra days at three of the locations, and I am very glad I did, as it allowed me to explore each location better and to work around the rainy and low cloud days which are a fact of life in the Alps. By the last day of the walk I could look back over the range of mountains and pick out the peaks and passes from every day of the trip, giving me the sense that I was well acquainted with this particular corner of the Alps. A special part of visiting Switzerland is the culture of the hospitality industry in which it seems a point of honor that each guest be looked after to the best possible degree.
