Taking the train through Spain –

discover a land of infinite variety
Our rail holidays in Spain explore many of the country’s most enticing regions, taking in a range of highlights, both on and off the beaten track. Because there’s no group, nor any arrangements to make (we do all that), you can be spontaneous, lingering at the places that interest you most, and using our comprehensive notes to guide you to such diverse sights as the world-famous Alhambra in Granada, Seville's old town, San Sebastián's pintxo bars, and the secluded fishing coves of the Costa Verde.

In the north, journey along the Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James), a historic pilgrimage route to a UNESCO World Heritage City, or hop between gastronomic hotspots in Spain's Basque Country. To the south, wind through enticing heritage cities towards the sea. At the country's heart are the treasures of Salamanca and Madrid, Spain's colourful capital.

Our expert's pick

"The narrow gauge network in Astrurias isn’t a particularly fast or luxurious mode of transport. But it does encapsulate the ethos of slow travel as it trundles amid the lush green hills, secluded beaches, and jaunty fishing ports of Spain’s Costa Verde. With no fewer than 100 stops, there are numerous opportunities for jumping off for an impromptu coastal walk, to spend time on a golden beach, or to indulge in a sumptuous seafood lunch before continuing onward."

Travelling to Spain by train

Our travel experts can help with finding the best routes and connections to travel to your holiday in Spain by train from the UK.

- An overnight stay in Avignon breaks up journeys to Castile and Andalucia, from where the high-speed AVE (Alta Velocidad Española) train takes you to Madrid in just over 7 hours.

- Segovia is then just a 30-minute train ride from Chamartin, a few metro stops away from Atocha train station.

- Seville is a 2.5-hour journey, again taking the high-speed AVE across the plains of Castilla La Mancha and the olive groves of the Guadalquivir Valley into the heart of this Andalucian city.
