The best places for an away-from-it-all winter holiday in Italy

There’s a special magic to a winter walking holiday in the Dolomites, with Italy’s most romantic peaks providing the backdrop, it's a real joy. There are miles of winter walking paths to explore, plus snowshoeing and tobogganing. For cross-country skiing options in Italy, the Drei Zinnen (‘Three Peaks’) region in the Dolomites is hard to beat.
 

Cross-country skiing in the Dolomites

In addition to winter walking, another reason for choosing the Drei Zinnen region is the option to enjoy cross-country skiing, with a ski network incorporating 200 kilometres of trails it caters very well for all levels (see our definitions below). You can book ski lessons and cross-country skiing locally.
  • No previous experience; requires lessons (can be booked locally). Should stick to green trails for cross-country skiing or nursery slopes for downhill skiing.
  • Has skied before and technique is now sufficiently honed to tackle red routes with confidence.
  • Highly experienced. Able to cope with the most difficult of trails/pistes (those graded black).
