Overall the quality of the hotels and food was good, and the walking and variety of walks were amazing. I would book another tour with Inntravel but I would not use them to book flights and airport transfers. Their service gave a very unsatisfactory ending to our holiday. I was also very disappointed with their attitude when we contacted them to try to discuss changing flights due to their poor advice.
We are sorry that our handling of some of the travel arrangements did not meet our usual high standards. We have responded to this customer directly to address specific concerns.
This was our first holiday with InnTravel and we chose the grade carefully. The grade description matched the walk perfectly and we were very pleased with distances, ascent, descent and type of path. The hotels were clearly used to welcoming InnTravel guests and made us feel welcome. All the hotels were clean and comfortable, and 2 of them were super special in terms of location and quality of food. We found the walking notes and the GPS tracker worked very well. The InnTravel app is user friendly and we made good use of it. Using InnTravel made a little-known part of Italy acccessible. This holiday, on the Gargano peninsular, includes coastal cliff walks, forest walks and pilgrim trails - lots of variety.
The walks in Foresta Umbra were magical. I found day 4 quite a challenge. Use walking poles. Hotel Il Porto in Mattinata the hotel we liked best. A perfect place to relax at the end of a great week's walking.

Insect repellant would have been useful at the beginning of the forest trail as there were lots of flies, but these disappeared as we increased altitude.
It is extremely cold in the forest as you said in the notes, so several extra layers are needed.
Lovely swimming in the smaller bays around Vieste.
As this is a late season holiday, many facilities were closed and retaurants limited.
We loved this new walk. In late September it was wonderful to spend the last of the summer walking along the deserted Puglia coast with its brilliant blue sea, through the Umbra forest with its ghostly cow bells, stunning mushrooms and fallow deer, and up to and through the towns of Monte Sant'Angelo and Mattinata. The food throughout was fabulous, and seaside dips were possible in both Vieste and Mattinata. The Hotel Il Porto was a massive treat and I'd recommend an extra night there - it was an excellent way to end the holiday - to relax in the grounds, or enjoy lunch in a local beachside restaurant after a swim.
This was a very well put together itinerary with an excellent variety of coastal and afforested walks
We enjoyed our holiday particularly the accomodation at the Elda Hotel and Hotel Il Porto in Mattinata. The walks were good, offerring a good variety of terrain. We would recommend using the GPX files on your phone as these were a good visual supplement to the instructions provided.
We had very unseasonal weather for September. Heavy rain and thunderstorms which meant we didn't enjoy the walking as much as we could have done.
the choice of restaurants in Vieste was huge and the food was delicious and reasonably priced.
Hotel Elda and Il Porto were very comfortable hotels and the staff were excellent
The Palace hotels in both Vieste and Saint Michele were not so good and certainly needed a revamp.
Vieste - had good meals at Locanda la Macina and La Piazzetta. Foresta Umbra - the map you provided was unreadable, but the Museo Natura around the corner from the hotel have excellent maps. Worth noting however that not all the footpaths marked on the map have signposts. Mattinata - unfortunately the weather was not kind to us but boat trips were available along the coast. Mattinata a very small town with few amenities. We had opted to stay 4 days in mattinata but this was too long and I wouldn't recommend it.
This was absolutely one of our favorite trips and we have been heartily recommending Puglia to our friends ever since. Despite eating plenty of gelato, pasta, olives, taralli, and drinking wonderful wine, we stayed fit and didn't gain any weight! Plus, we met some wonderful people along the way. It was just what a great vacation should be.
The Gargano Peninsula is a great find, with very few English and authentically Italian. We enjoyed the variety and character of each walk. The walk from Vieste along the coast was a perfect start to the holiday-take swimming gear and stop for a swim in beautiful warm, clear water in one of the smaller coves. We were very pleased that we had booked 2 extra night at Il Porto, a perfect relaxing few days in a great hotel. The room, food and staff were excellent and the views across the bay were stunning.
This was a delightful walking holiday of contrasting scenery, starting with the coast in Vieste, through the Gargano forest and finishing with the hillsides around Monte St Angelo and Mattinata. All the hotels were of good quality and provided gerat food. Do buy a crate of water to take with your bags from Vieste to the Elda Hotel as the hotel only provide drinking water with meals or from the bar (at a cost).
We have many highlights. The coastline at Vieste was stunningly beautiful and the fishing stations exquisitely elegant and well preserved. We all loved the forests and the gorgeous Hotel Elda and felt very relaxed resting there.
We really enjoyed the variety of venues and the walks offered: Viesite's interesting coastline and beautiful sandy beaches; Foresta Umbra's verdant, peaceful and uplifting forest was an absolute joy to walk through; Monte San Angelo's fascinating history and then there was Hotel Il Porto in Mattinata - a stunning location, fabulous service and probably the best hotel food we have ever tasted!
A very enjoyable holiday through varied terrain staying at good quality hotels. My favouite walk was from the edge of the Foresta Umbra to Monte Sant'Angelo and then wandering around the streets of the old town and visiting the cave church. Whilst late May and early June are too late for Orchids, there were other plant varieties such as Rockrose, Arabian Pea, Campanula, Broom, and many others, flowering in abundance. The included meals were all very good, but I thought the meals provided by the Elda Hotel, in Foresta Umbra, were particularly enjoyable. The taxi pick-ups and drop-offs were very efficient.
We were too late for the orchids, which was a shame. A month earlier might have shown some (we saw none) but there were some interesting and novel flowers along the route. The birdsong in the Foresta Umbra was tremendous. In Vieste the first night we chose to eat at the adjacent Ristorante 19. Had an excellent meal and avoided a cloudburst! The second night we went for a Neopolian pizza at Habituè, near the hotel, where we had some of the best pizza we've ever eaten. The trabuccos were a very good part of the first day walk. Monte Sant'Angelo was a fascinating old town and we saw as much of it as possible in the short time we were there.
The Gargano Peninsula walk is an excellent trip with lots of variety and highpoints: beautiful beaches and cliffs; charming old towns to explore; a very important, mature forest; lots of solitude mixed with excellent hotels and food.
Foresta Umbra was a very distinctive place with a special atmosphere - unforgettable. There is a birdsong app called Merlin which was very rewarding, given the nonstop birdsong. At Vieste we followed the hotel recommendation to dine at Osteria al Duomo, and it was excellent.
We enjoyed the variety of walks, coastal, forest woodland and countryside. There was an abundance of wild flowers and beautiful views and interesting cultural villages. A good mix of sights in a remote and relatively unknown part of Italy.
A walking holiday with great variety. Vieste and its Trabucchi provide an interesting starting point. Good choice of restaurants. We had excellent food at Gustus in Corso Lorenzo Fazzini and in the small but lively La Galea opposite the Palace hotel. Memorable highlights of our trip were:
Being in Vieste for the Festival of Santa Maria di Merino and witnessing the colourful procession through the streets and along the beach.
The tranquility and constantly changing vegetation of Forest Umbra. A pleasant surprise to eventually emerge in a very English style Beech forest, all the while serenaded by birdsong.
The wonderful array of wild flowers, particularly on the walk up to Monte Sant'Angelo with the scent of wild rosemary, thyme and yellow broom hanging in the air.
The excellent Hotel Il Porto. Fine views, fine dining and pretty gardens. A lovely way to end the holiday.
This is a worthy additoin to Inntravel's walking holidays, with a great variety of walking - coastal paths, deep forest, open valleys - two good hotels and two excellent ones (Elda and Il Porto). The cooking at Elda was some of the most imaginative we've come across - porcini powder on your 'tiramisu'? It worked. We're also happy to confirm the quality of Vecchia Vieste, recommended but not tested by Inntravel. Other highlights: the birdsong in the forest on day 3, the flowers on day 4 (we went in the first week of May) and the castle at Monte Sant' Angelo.
A lovely trip - meticulously organised. The Gargano Peninsula is a remote and peaceful place - just perfect for a relaxing walking holiday. The Umbra Forest is a very special place and to stay right in the heart of it was a very memorable experience. We enjoyed some wonderful walks, great weather and superb cuisine. Thanks for another great holiday Inntravel!
Enjoyed the variety of walks and accommodation. Included dinners were great. Loved the wildflowers and saw about 9 or more varieties of orchid particularly on last three days of walking. Had a good meal at Aqua in Vieste. Two beach restaurants on first walk were open as was the refugio on second walk.
Excellent and varied walking across the Gargano Peninsula. One of the highlights for us was the number of different orchid varieties on show. The restaurant Vecchia Vieste was excellent and very friendly and we would recommend it. Also the pizza in Gusto in Vieste was very good.
The coastal sections we really enjoyed and would highly recommend the walk around Vieste and to the northwest. Part of the charm we experienced may be due to the time of year, when there are almost no tourists around. During the summer months, I imagine these areas would be very busy judging by the number of seasonal campgrounds and restaurants along the route. Similarly the forested area in the Umbra Forest next to the Elda Hotel is well worth hiking in and quite unique for us. We would both recommend exploring this area. Day 4 - Hike to Monte Sant' Angelo - also an enjoyable walk offering a mix of forest and open hiking. The village of Monte Sant Angelo is well worth exploring and after 2 nights at the Elda Hotel, was a welcome change.
The highlight has to be the two days spent in the Foresta Umbra. An unforgettable experience.
