Full days on the trails, challenging terrain, and testing ascents and descents – but still with time to appreciate your surroundings.
The season for this holiday is:

This route involves ladder sections. There is therefore an alternative, which starts a little further up the road and goes straight on to the Grand Balcon Sud, meeting the main route where the Lac Blanc detour starts. It’s 7.5km, 3.5hrs, 800m ascent, 370m descent
A short bus ride takes you from Argentière to the start of the grand finale of the tour, which climbs through forest, then along high Alpine paths and the Grand Balcon Sud, with stunning views across the Chamonix valley – not just of the snowy summit of Mont Blanc, but of the striking peaks and aiguilles (pinnacles) of the massif, many of them over 4,000 metres. You’ll also see the famous Mer de Glace and Bossons glacier, which, even today, reaches far down towards the valley floor. You can detour to Lac Blanc, a rightly popular picnic spot, before continuing westwards to reach the Flégère cable car to descend into Chamonix.

The Tour of Mont Blanc holiday was everything we wanted it to be and more. The walking was challenging as every day started with a climb but the views at the top were stunning and the experiences we had were incredible. The information pack with maps and walking notes were excellent and we were able to follow these easily. We met so many wonderful people as we passed each other on the trek and then met up with them again in our hotel in the evening. All hoteliers greeted us warmly when we arrived and provided us with a delicious breakfast each morning.
Thrilling but challenging is the best description of the TMB. Every day brought fantastic scenery and wonderful hikes. The walking is tough with lots of "high knee" ascents and steep descents but the reward was breathtaking views, alpine meadows and gorgeous little towns. We were fortunate to have excellent weather apart from 1 day where we had rain, thunder, lightning and hailstones. The terrain then becomes very challenging with paths turning to mud and streams so one needs to be prepared. Because of a heavy late spring snowfall, we crossed numerous snowfields, with some steep sections at the 2000 metre level. We weren't expecting this as it was mid July so it would have been useful to have spikes at the outset (we bought them in Courmayeur). Our advice woud be to check the local conditions before you start the TMB. There were also multiple fast flowing streams, some quite high, to be forded. Our favourite day was the hike from Trient to Argentiere over Col de Blame and Posettes ridge, even though it was the longest day but we had the most stunning scenery. Hotel Crampon was excellent in every way and throughout the holiday all accomodation was satisfactory. We felt that we had a better offer of accomodation with Inntravel compared to some other groups we met along the way. Whilst in Courmayeur we did the Skyway Monte Bianco which we would thoroughly recommend. The Inntravel recommendations for restaurants in Saint Gervais and Argentiere were superb. We thoroughly enjoyed the TMB and so pleased Inntravel added it to their portfolio. As they advise it is important to have a good level of fitness so that you can enjoy the rewards from the tough hikes.
Personal highlights are the views, the scenery and the camaraderie of fellow walkers.

Tour de Mont Blanc is a fantastic multiday high mountain trek. The Inntravel programme enabled us to take it on in a manageable way by using the occasional local bus or cable car and to stay in some lovely hotels. This doesn't rule out the element of challenge such as, in our case, extensive late lying snow fields (microspike crampons were a boon), low cloud / mist at times and some fast flowing rivers to ford. We also had some sparkling sun and always fabulous scenery. The trek requires some resilience and reourcefulness. Being a popular route there are other hikers and their encouragment and tips are invaluable. Overall, we're very pleased that the TMB has a place in the Inntravel provision of holidays.
Overall I was glad I went in June. The TMB was packed then and I hate to think what it would be like in peak season! You need to be ruthless to catch some of the buses, queuing is not respected and even in June there were more people than spaces. My tips are walking poles are a must and additionally fit them with baskets if there's snow. Also take lightweight crocs in your daysack for refuges and shared facilities. Micro crampons could be useful in the snow, otherwise just toboggan, it's easier than continually slipping over and more fun. Remember to take a Swiss plug adapter! My personal highlights - I've been lucky to have walked all over the world, but I felt a real sense of achievement in completing the TMB. It's not for the feint hearted and to walk it self guided took all our knowledge and experience. The camaraderie on the walk is great, everyone greets each other and helps each other. The scenery is absolutely stunning and I've never seen so many wildflowers. It's so cool to switch between the three countries - at one point we were on a French train, eating Italian pizza, travelling through Switzerland! Another holiday related highlight was going up the Aiguille du Midi and eating lunch at the 3842 restuarant. I think it's the highest place I've ever had lunch, other than on a plane! The must do though is taking Le Panoramic, which is a gondala ride at the top of the Aiguille du Midi over the ice fields and glaciers of Mont Blanc. It's much more intimate than the Aiguille du Midi and is utterly sensational. It joins up with the Skyway Monte Bianco. So we went over to Italy from France, then back to France for lunch!
