Please do not book your flights until we have confirmed your accommodation to you. Alternatively, our expert reservations team will be happy to offer advice and to make flight bookings for you for any of the options listed above. We charge £35 per person for our flight booking service. We thoroughly enjoyed this holiday, that enabled us to travel easily to visit cities on the Camino Frances route. Bilbao was a great starting point: the Guggenheim is definitely worth a visit and we can recommend sampling the pinxtos in El Globo. The accommodation was generally very good, apart from in Leon, and the Paradors were a particular highlight. We had a memorable lunch, at the Hotel Real Colegiata de San Isidora near the Basilica in Leon, where the menú del día was both delicious and great value for money. Santiago was a delight and a fitting finish to our pilgrimage!
We loved all the cities we visited on this trip and enjoyed the holiday very much. Having two nights in each of the main locations was just about enough time to get a feel of the historic centres, which are quite compact, and to visit the principal sites. All the hotels were well located with friendly, helpful staff. Tayko is a lovely 'boutique' hotel and a great start to the trip. Meson El Cid has an old fashioned charm and overlooks the magnificent cathedral. We couldn't get a taxi from Burgos station so took the bus but this left us a tricky walk up many steps with our cases - so best to wait for the taxi which goes to the upper level. La Posada Regia is also old fashioned but feels a little 'tired'. Breakfast there was poor but the restaurant that is part of the hotel was very good and we ate there both nights. The Parador is lovely but we had very little time there so it felt like a rushed visit. We were in the annex at Virxe de Cerca but this overlooked the very nice, peaceful garden at the back which was a real bonus. Overall, this was a great holiday and we'd recommend it but the travelling is quite tiring and we did find that several of our trains were delayed which was frustrating at the time but soon forgotten after arrival and settling in.
Was a wonderful experience although very strenuous. Perhaps not designed for the older traveller?

This holiday does indeed feel like a journey leading to a destination; it doesn’t so much end after ten days as reach a spectacular climax. Your route mirrors that taken by centuries of pilgrims and walkers, and as with them you marvel at the glories of the monuments that mark the way.
A varied and interesting journey through some amazing scenery to atmospheric locations, which provided a real flavour of the Camino route, both ancient and contemporary, and an insight into the diverse regions along the way.
We have always longed to go to Santiago del Compostela, but never managed to do so when younger and fitter. Our days of walking long distances are well over, sadly. This holiday (or 'cheat pilgrimage' as we call it!) was great. The ancient old cities of Burgos, Leon and Santiago itself were quite wonderful. Bilbao inspirational - having turned itself around in the last 30 years from a failing town and industrial wasteland into a green, modern, thriving city. We loved Hotel Tayko - its friendly staff, excellent restaurant and lovely reconstruction from an old building into a contemporary hotel. They specifically asked us to tell you how much they love working with Inntravel, (and also that they love welcoming Inntravellers!) So thanks!!
The view over the Cathedral in Burgos from our bedroom was an absolute joy. Watching, from the hotel, the pilgrims setting off each morning was very moving and reflected the continuing appeal and purpose of the Camino.
Several museums: Museo de la Evolucion Humana in Burgos, el Museo de las Peregrinaciones and the Museo do Pobo Galego in Santiago, the guided tour round La Casa de Botines in Leon were outstanding.
Wandering round the old towns in all the cities was interesting and enjoyable.
Journey Along the Camino de Santiago - A Self-Guided Journey
A well organised journey with a few hiccups on our particular trip. The railway travel was generally very good although the sector from Leon to Monforte de Lemos was a problem. This was planned to be late in the day, unfortunately, but ended up being 2 hours late, meaning we didn’t arrive at the Parador until 10:30pm and so we were too late to have the ’included’ dinner, just getting a bar meal. On the accommodation side, this started well with us being upgraded at Hotel Tayko in Bilbao to a river view room, but after that things were not as expected. The Meson del Cid hotel in Burgos was fine, with a room in the annexe, but the hotel’s ‘elegant restaurant’ mentioned in the notes was closed. The room we were given in La Posada Regia, Leon was a very low ceilinged attic room with only a skylight so it was dark, with no views and a few bumped heads! The hotel restaurant here, billed as ‘one of the best places in town’ in the notes, was also unfortunately closed for holidays during our visit. The Parador in Monforte de Lemos was lovely (except we didn’t have long enough there, as mentioned above!). Hotel Virxe da Cerca in Santiago was fine and the hidden garden was a bonus however, the only food available in the evening was a snack from its cafeteria not a ‘restaurant offering traditional Galician fare’.
Manor Houses of the Minho - A Self-Guided Walking Holiday
Having met the delightful Count of Calheiros at the Inntravel event at Cheltenham race course in 2017 we were keen to go on this particular holiday but were foiled by Covid until this year. Overall the holiday was enjoyable although a lot of the walking routes were rather boring, with more road walking than we expected. Also the title of the holiday and the website description: ‘You stay mostly in 16th and 17th-century traditional mansions’, is rather misleading since only 2 of the 4 places used were mansions. The big disappointment was the accommodation in Ponte de Lima where we were originally told there would be availability at Mercearia da Vila, the standard hotel but, despite requesting a booking the same day, we had to accept the alternative Arc My’Otel and pay a supplement. As other reviewers have commented, this hotel is just not up to normal Inntravel standards for accommodation. The room we had was a tiny cell, made worse by a black wall, with barely room to get round the bed and no storage other than a wardrobe rail … the bathroom was more spacious!! Breakfast was OK (except for the tasteless juices) but not a patch on those at Mercearia, according to the accounts of our fellow travellers staying there.
Hotel Tayko Bilbao excellent. Splendid food, wine & ambience in the old town at very reasonable prices. The indoor market worthy of a visit. Cathedral at Burgos not to be missed. Recommend hotel room overlooking the cathedral. The Gaudi Museum in Leon. We were fortunate to attend a Pilgrim Mass in Santiago cathedral and witness the extraordinary spectacle of swinging the largest incense burner in the world.
Overall experience excellent, all the information you required. Very well presented, a very memorable holiday.
Bilbao Guggenheim - allow plenty of time, lots to see and you can get up close and personal with the building and the artworks
Burgos Cathedral - gorgeous. The lanterns in the roof are exquisite
the Pantheon at San Isidoro in Leon - breathtaking frescoes
Santiago is special - the atmosphere generated by the arrival of pilgrims, the music in the main square in the evenings
the Portico de la Gloria in Santiago - don't miss it, secure your ticket online or on arrival in Santiago.
This was a wonderful holiday with a real sense of pilgrimage, travelling from city to city and cathedral to cathedral. The city walk notes and background information are very comprehensive and made sure we didn't miss anything. The hotels varied in quality with the Posada Regia in Leon being rather basic. The cathedral view from the Meson del Cid in Burgos was stunning and the night in the Parador was a real treat. The travel information in lots of places suggested getting taxis for transfers but the only places we used taxis were Burgos and Monforte de Lemos. In Leon we walked to and from the station, In Santiago we walked to the hotel and at the end got the airport bus 6A from almost outside the hotel for a cost of one euro each. It took about 30 minutes. This bus could also be used from the station at the beginning. We enjoyed sampling the local cuisine in each place and ate some things we had never tried before. The food in restaurants tended to be very local and traditional and was generally very reasonably priced, as was wine and beer.
A new tour for your Company, much enjoyed, beautiful countryside, travelling by train.
We found Bilbao interesting, Burgos and Leon impressive, Monforte de Lemos quaint (an otter was seen in the river) and Santiago delightful. Burgos was much colder than expected - a north-easterly wind was blowing keeping the temperature down to 14-17C. As we moved west so the skies brightened and the temperature was 22C by the time we got to Santiago. We were surprised that we could rarely get an evening meal before 8.00pm at which time the eating places filled up quickly.
We enjoyed Burgos, Leon and Santiago immensely, but we would have preferred an extra day in Santiago and omitting the stay in Monforte de Lemos altogether.
The holiday provided an interesting and thoroughly enjoyable visit to an area of Spain I had never previously been. Each city was intriguing, the cathedrals are wonderful and the suggested walks meant that I was able to visit areas that might otherwise have been missed.
The concept of this journey is brilliant, and many of our friends were really envious! The location of all of the hotels were excellent, the room quality very good, in all but one of the hotels. Train journey was as arranged, and went very smoothly (even the coach replacements); lovely landscape, too. We enjoyed Bilbao, Burgs, Leon, and, of course,Santiago de Compostela. We were a little bemused at the choice of Monforte de Lemos, but that may be perhaps because we couldn't stay at the Parador, and had to stay in town (Hotel Cardenal, which wasn't too bad, and in a good location).
The Guggenheim Museum had more art than we expected and the museum itself is a work of art. The rest of Bilbao kept us busy for the remaining time. Burgos exceeded expectations and has one of the finest cathedrals we have ever visited, and there have been many in our travels. Even after Burgos, Leon exceeded expectations by having more of the feel of a metropolitan lived-in city with lots to see and do. The climax was Santiago de Compostella, which seemed more of a tourist city in a compact enclosed area, but it is now what it has been for 1000 years, a destination for pilgrims and tourists.
Great non-overenergetic holiday around 4 great cities. The notes were extensive which made it virtually impossible to get lost. Well done, Inntravel.
In overall terms, this was a very enjoyable holiday, providing a great insight into the history, culture and modern experience of living in a series of cities and towns strung out along the Camino de Santiago route in Northern Spain, and also in Portugal. We enjoyed the immersive experience of spending so much time in these beautiful, historical and often vibrant places and travelling between them by train. Inntravel has an excellent cutsomer support team, who made the booking process as straightforward for us as possible, while offering consistently excellent advice and answers to our pre-holiday questions. We recommend that future customers think carefully, however about the challenges of travelling such a long way using non-couriered, overland transport before they book this hoilday for themselves. As two reasonably fit people in our mid to late sixties, we coped with the train travel element of the holiday pretty well, although this worked best for us when we were able to travel first class on modern, long distance Spanish trains. Some of the regional train service that we used were more challenging, owing to limited (or very limited) basic services provided on board these trains and at stations, and the lengthy journey times involved in these parts of our holiday. Quite challenging for people like us in our mid to late sixties.
A wonderful way of exploring a new part of Spain to us - linked by the pilgrim story. Extraordinary landscape and architecture, old and modern. The walk suggestions in each location were excellent, drawing attention to interesting sites and histories.
