Holiday information

A touring holiday by rail through Emilia Romagna

Taking the train through Emilia Romagna – Italy’s Food Valley – and staying in the cities of Parma, Modena and Bologna, you savour Italy’s most renowned produce, immerse yourself in its amazing cultural heritage, and uncover some of its best-preserved medieval centres.
Many of the foods we most readily associate with Italy – succulent Parma Ham, deliciously rich Bolognese sauce and sharp, tangy Parmesan cheese – have their roots in and are specialities of Emilia Romagna. But these are just a few of the region’s many culinary treasures, which together have earned it the sobriquet ‘Italy’s Food Valley’.

This gastronomic pilgrimage begins in the city of Parma, whose name is synonymous with its cured ham. As well as the superb local produce to be savoured here, there are architectural prizes such as an 11th-century Duomo and octagonal, pink marble Baptistry. Your next stop, Modena, is an up-and-coming foodie city best known for its balsamic vinegar and fabulous food emporium, Mercato Albinelli. Your journey then ends in Bologna, famous for its mortadella, fresh egg pasta and national dish of Ragù alla Bolognese. Indulge in its bustling street food scene and discover its glorious medieval centre, galleried streets and leaning towers.

We recommend where to taste and buy produce; the osterie and trattorie to try, as well as speciality dishes to look out for on their menus; and our favourite places to enjoy the amazing street food such as Parma’s addictive carciofa pastries and the piadina, Bologna’s fabulous flatbread.

Itinerary

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. You can start on the day of your choice and are free to add extra nights.
  • The average maximum daytime temperatures and monthly rainfall relate to the nearest weather station and are intended as a guide only.
    Average temperatures and rainfall
Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec
    °C 9 10 14 17 23 27 31 32 26 21 14 10

  • Arrival in Parma
Night 1: at Hotel Palazzo dalla Rosa Prati (the first of two nights here)
As your first night’s accommodation is on the day of travel, Day 1 is your first day of exploration.
  • Explore Parma
A UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy and the very heart of the Food Valley, Parma is known for its Prosciutto di Parma (Parma ham), Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, Porcini di Borgotaro mushrooms and Culatello di Zibello (cured ham). Our food-themed, self-guided city tour leads you to specialist suppliers in Parma’s historic centre and to the city’s superb patisseries and street food vendors. It also takes in all the must-see sights, including the pink Verona-marble Battistero (baptistry), the Pilotta Palace, which houses the fabulous Farnese Theatre and the National Gallery, plus the Duomo with its frescoed dome masterpiece.
  • Pre-book a visit to a cheese-maker
We highly recommend adding a tour to a Parmigiano Reggiano producer to witness the creation of the region’s iconic cheese and to taste different-aged varieties. This can be combined with a visit to a Prosciutto di Parma producer – see ‘Prices & Travel’ for details of pre-booking.
Visit a parma ham and parmesan cheese producer
  • Parma to Modena: 30-40mins by train
You have a short onward journey to Modena where you spend two nights at the Hotel Canalgrande. Make a beeline for Mercato Albinelli, the city’s oldest covered market and one of the most beautiful in Italy. Taste (and buy) the famous Modena balsamic vinegar from a family producer in the market or enjoy typical Modena dishes such as tortellini with cream and Torte Gualmini (sour cherry tart) from one of the stallholders.
    Lunch from a traditional salumeria
  • Explore Modena
Following our city tour, discover Modena’s architectural wealth, including Piazza Grande with its sublime 12th-century Duomo and its Ghirlandina belltower, plus the Palazzo Comunale (Town Hall) with its many paintings and the famous Secchia Rapita (stolen bucket), one of Italy’s most contentious historic artefacts. Modena is the birthplace of Enzo Ferrari – creator of the seminal car that bears his name – and motor enthusiasts may like to include a visit to his home, now the Ferrari Museum and a shrine to Italian car design.

From Modena, there’s also the opportunity to enjoy a day trip to the town of Reggio Emilia where the Italian tricolour flag was born, to enjoy its unique food specialities such as erbazzone (delicious cheese and spinach pastries).
    Modena, home of Pavarotti
  • Modena to Bologna: 30mins by train
Once again, a short onward journey enables you to arrive in Bologna, where you spend your final two nights at the Art Hotel Commercianti, with plenty of time to begin your exploration of this vibrant city. Taking centre stage is the labyrinth of tiny lanes that make up the Quadrilatero del Gusto (Tasty Quarter), where you’ll find ancient hostelries and superb delis brimming with Bologna’s speciality foods, as well as the Mercato di Mezzo for an overload of tempting food stalls.
    Piadina, typical streetfood of Bologna
  • Explore Bologna
A UNESCO World Heritage Site with what is considered the best-preserved medieval centre in the world, Bologna deserves to be explored at leisure. Using our detailed notes, stroll the city’s magnificent porticos which line its elegant streets; linger in Piazza Maggiore, the heart of the city, where you’ll find the striking Basilica, Palazzo del Podestà and Palazzo d’Accursio o Comunale; pay a visit to the Cathedral and the leaning Two Towers; and browse the city’s famous markets.

Accommodation

The high-quality hotels on this holiday cover a wide spectrum of styles: from Rococò extravagance to contemporary chic. To make your holiday all the more special, we offer an upgrade hotel in Bologna.

In some places, we work with more than one hotel, as shown below. All are hand-picked by us and, unless there is a price implication (in which case we will contact you to discuss your options), we will tell you which one we have booked for you on your booking confirmation.

With so much to see and do, there are plenty of reasons to add an extra night in all three cities.

    Travelling from outside the UK

If you are flying from outside Europe,  we recommend flying into Milan. To discuss onward connecting travel to the start of your holiday, please contact us.

This list of flight options should be used as a guide only, and you should check each airline’s website for current routes, frequency and schedules. Not all flights operate daily, and may not run for the entire season. You should also heed the latest flight arrival time and earliest flight departure time, as it may not be possible to arrange connecting travel outside these times. Please do not book your flights until we have confirmed your accommodation to you. Alternatively, our expert reservations team will be happy to offer advice and to make flight bookings for you for any of the options listed above. We charge £35 per person for our flight booking service. Your flights are then covered by our package-booking conditions, which give you greater protection in the event of delay or cancellation, as well as providing ATOL cover.

  • Prices below are based on 2 people travelling together. If you are travelling solo or as a party of 3 or more and our arrangements include a taxi, please contact us for prices; additional passengers often pay less.

Unless otherwise stated, connecting travel by rail or bus tend to be from the city centre station, rather than from its airport, and connections between the two should be paid for locally.

Where a price range is given, the price you pay depends on your date of travel.

  • Yes, it’s something we insist on, even for holidays in the UK. The vast majority of holidays go smoothly, but when things go wrong, it can be expensive to put them right. Buying a new pair of walking boots after your suitcase is stolen mightn’t seem so bad, but the bill for being airlifted down from a mountain with a broken leg or flown home while still recovering from an illness or accident can incur a five or six-figure bill.

Many insurers offer travel insurance (you can find details on our insurance page of a policy that you may like to consider if you are a UK resident), but you do need to make sure that you’re covered for medical emergencies – including falling ill with Covid-19 while on holiday – and repatriation. We also recommend that you are covered for other eventualities, such as cancellation and loss of luggage and passports.

When you purchase a policy, be sure to check that it covers the activities you'll be doing on holiday and that it is adequate for your own individual needs.
  • It is your responsibility to ensure you are in possession of the correct travel documents, with the correct validity. If you’re a UK citizen, you need a full British passport to travel to Italy, but not a visa (please note, however, that a new travel authorisation system is being introduced). If you are a citizen of another country, you’ll need to check requirements with the national embassy or your own consulate.

Current information regarding vaccinations and travel health advice for UK citizens can be found through the Travel Health Pro website. You must make sure you have adequate insurance cover for illness, accidents and repatriation (see the insurance question). You should also apply for a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) if your EHIC has expired (if you have a still-valid EHIC, you can use this until it expires).
  • The principal official language is Italian, though some regions have a second official language, such as South Tyrol, where German is widely spoken. The currency is the Euro. Italian time is GMT/UTC + 1. It uses Daylight Saving Time, so in summer is on BST + 1.

  • The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) provides up-to-date, country-by-country travel advice, as well as information on security, local laws, passports and visas for UK citizens.
