A rail holiday from Vienna to Trieste

Ruling over an empire that stretched from the Adriatic Sea to the Russian border, the Habsburgs were for centuries Central Europe’s most influential rulers. Their legacy lives on in the form of splendid architecture epitomised by their vast palaces and opulent summer residences, and in the pioneering railway which connects Vienna, Graz, Ljubljana and Trieste.  
Besides their common imperial past, these fascinating cities are united by their shared role in Europe’s first coffee craze. Whether or not it was the Ottoman army who introduced the Habsburgs to coffee (legend has it that the retreating army left behind sacks of beans in Vienna in the 17th century), but coffee houses soon became an integral part of the empire, convivial places purposely designed for lingering. On this holiday, there’s plenty of time to indulge in the delights of the Kaffeehaus, and to succumb to the many other charms of these four captivating cities and sublime Lake Bled.

  • Arrival in Vienna
    Night 1: at Hotel Kaiserhof (the first of two nights here).
    As your first night’s accommodation is on the day of travel, Day 1 is your first day of exploration.
  • Explore Vienna
    Austria’s sophisticated capital is a city which needs little introduction. The former headquarters of the Habsburgs, Vienna is a place with a taste for the finer things in life, be they the exquisite orchestral performances given in the prestigious Musikverein or cups of freshly ground coffee sipped amid the gleaming interiors of a traditional Kaffeehaus. With a full day here, there’s time to take in all of the city’s major sights: see the many works of art and architectural treasures of the Hofburg Palace, described as a ‘city within a city’; and wonder at the no-expense-spared Baroque Schloss Schönbrunn, in whose Hall of Mirrors the six-year-old Mozart astonished the Empress Maria-Theresa with his precocious talents.

  • Vienna to Graz
    Leaving Vienna, you follow the trail of imperial ambition south to Graz, on the ground-breaking railway line commissioned by Emperor Franz Josef. Completed in 1854, the UNESCO-listed Semmeringbahn is a monumental feat of engineering, whisking passengers through the mountains by means of a spectacular series of tunnels and double-decker viaducts. Once in Graz, you spend two nights at the Hotel zum Dom, ideally located for seeing the city’s unique blend of ancient and modern sights.
  • Explore Graz
    Often described as a ‘Vienna in miniature’, Austria’s second city has plenty to interest the visitor, yet remains relatively undiscovered. As well as the wonderfully preserved Old Town, iconic Clock Tower, ornate Gothic cathedral and postcard-perfect hill-top castle, Graz is also home to a futuristic art gallery known locally as ‘the friendly alien’, and the Murinsel – an artificial, floating island-cum-bridge where you can enjoy a coffee as the river rushes by.

  • Graz to Bled
    Today’s rail journey sees you continue south through Mitteleuropa, crossing the border from Austria into Slovenia. You travel as far as Lesce by train, from where a short taxi transfer brings you to Lake Bled, one of Slovenia's best-known landmarks, and the Hotel Vila Bled or Hotel Triglav, where you spend two nights.
  • Explore Lake Bled
    You may wish simply to enjoy the idyllic location, perhaps strolling along the lake's shores to panoramic Bled Castle or hiring a boat to row across the lake to ring the ‘wishing bell’ on the island in the middle of the lake.

    If you are travelling between May and mid-October, you could also choose to walk to the Vintgar Gorge. Paths lead alongside the lake, then through a string of small villages and finally through woodland to the gorge (small entrance fee payable), a series of boardwalks and bridges lead you spectacularly upstream along the entire length of the gorge. A gentle country trail then leads you back to Lake Bled. (16km, 5hrs)

  • Bled to Ljubljana
    Leaving Bled, you make your way – first by taxi and then by train – to Ljubljana, Slovenia's welcoming capital. Here, you stay centrally at the Angel Hotel or Pension Slamic.
  • Explore Ljubljana
    Slovenia's verdant capital rivals Vienna as a pocket-sized, easily navigated city shaped by the Art Nouveau and Viennese architects of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Key sights include the intriguing Triple Bridge and panoramic 12th-century castle, but the best way to get to know Ljubljana is simply to stroll its narrow, traffic-free streets, take a boat tour along the willow-lined Ljubljanica River which flows through the middle of the city, or visit the vibrant farmers' market held in the heart of the Old Town (closed Sundays).

  • Ljubljana to Trieste
    Departing Ljubljana today, you cross the Slovenian Karst by train and make your way towards your final destination, the Italian port-city of Trieste. As the journey progresses, the sense of being at the crossroads of Europe intensifies – especially when you pass through the former Iron Curtain border at Sežana, featured in Ian Fleming’s From Russia with Love. From here, your route leads into the heart of Prosecco country before eventually arriving in Trieste, where your final two nights are spent at the Savoia Excelsior Palace or Grand Hotel Duchi d'Aosta, both of which boast superb locations.
  • Explore Trieste
    Declared a free port in 1719, Trieste has long been a melting pot of cultures, languages and ethnicities, a juncture of east and west and gateway to the rest of the Habsburgs’ lands. You’ll feel it in the incredible variety of architecture – Orthodox cathedrals rub shoulders with ancient Roman remains and Italianate squares – and in the ubiquitous coffee houses, remnants from the days when this coastal city was the trading heart of a mighty empire (even today Trieste remains the headquarters of coffee giants Illy). Spend your full day here exploring the impressive neoclassical buildings and boulevards of the medieval core; the huge Piazza Unità d'Italia and Canal Grande, both of which bear more than a passing resemblance to their more famous counterparts in Venice; Viale Joyce – a street named for the Irish author James Joyce, who made Trieste his home for many years; and the nearby Miramare Castle, a 19th-century Gothic masterpiece situated on a rocky outcrop.

All five hotels are very well located for exploring.

Please note: most beds in Austrian hotels are normally one large base with two mattresses/duvets. We refer to these as 'Austrian Twins' and they are locally regarded to serve requests for both double and twin bedded rooms. Separate twin beds or traditional double beds with one large mattress are rare and cannot be guaranteed.

In some places, we work with more than one hotel, as shown below. All are hand-picked by us and, unless there is a price implication (in which case we will contact you to discuss your options), we will tell you which one we have booked for you on your booking confirmation.

Wherever you stay in Ljubljana, Bled or Trieste, we recommend an extra night to take in more of the sights. In fact, we recommend adding an extra night in all five bases, as there is plenty to explore in each!

    Sadly Inntravel are resting on their laurels. We travelled with you several times before COVID and the last time you were going downhill. Post COVID there is no improvement and in fact we will seriously consider travelling with you again. Too much hassle trying to get you to understand what we wanted.

    Lake Bled was a definite highlight - very beautiful and Vila Bled an ideal place to stay. Graz was a highlight as our time coincided with a local festival - most people in national dress and bands or singers in every square or courtyard! The one day in Venice was also a highlight, with a 24 hour ticket for the waterbus service enabling us to take full advantage. But we did also enjoy Vienna, Trieste and Ljubljana.

    Taxis were difficult to find in Vienna (at the City Centre Air terminal) and at Trieste Centrale.
    Our personal highlights were exploring Bled and Ljubljiana. We also very much enjoyed Graz, a (to us) previously undiscovered gem.
    The documentation (when it eventually came) was excellent, detailed and full of helpful tips.

    We all felt the highlights were in Slovenia. It was just right seeing Lake Bled in the middle of the holiday and relaxing there by walking around the lake and rowing a boat on it. Ljubljiana was delightful and easy to get around. The Museum of Contemporary History in the Tivoli park is definitely worth a visit - it explains the history of the area from 1914 onwards and is extremely well presented. We also thoroughly enjoyed Vienna and Graz. Fortunately, when the weather was at its worst (lots of rain), we were in Vienna where there are plenty of galleries to visit - the Klimt and Breughel art was a definite highlight - and cakes to eat. Graz was another small gem whcih we knew very little about but is definitely worth a wander around. Trieste was probably my least favourite place - it felt busier and a bit scruffier- but even so we had a good time there.

    The optional visit to Lake Bled, staying at Villa Bled, was a wonderful experience, one we would strongly recommend to everyone booking this particular tour. The rail journeys were disappointingly poor as was the lack of up to date travel information and alterations from Inntravel. We would recommend that all customers should ensure that they receive their documents and especially their tickets in good time as Inntravel had to be contacted on several ocassions before even pdf copies were sent to us. As this travel pack is one of the big selling points of the tours offered by Inntravel, it really should be available well before the departure date to enable travellers to study and plan their visits to the various cities. We had to spend a considerable amount of time researching our city visits as we felt we could not rely on the Inntravel documentation arriving on time.

    It is worth pointing out that the smoothest and most efficient part of our whole journey was a FlixBus journey from Trieste to Venice which we booked ourselves.

    Overall this is a very worthwhile trip, which serves as an excellent "taster" for a selection of sites that would reward a longer stay at each! It's probably worth stressing that you are visiting 4 major cities, 2 of them capitals, and a very popular tourist venue, so eating out can be rather expensive, if you want to dine well! We had an extra day in Vienna and after completing the suggested walk on Day 1 chose to visit Nußdorf and walk to Kahlenberg through the vineyards; a very scenic walk and easily accessible via the local trams. Vienna is a fascinating city - we will be going back! The hotels were generally excellent; our personal favourite was Hotel Angel in Ljubljana, by a whisker from Graz where we had the biggest room I can recall in our various travels. Graz and Ljubljana were also our favourite venues on the trip - some wonderful things to explore and plenty of places to sit and watch too. Lake Bled is a beautiful place to visit, but can be very busy - we were fairly early in the season, which was possibly a good thing? All credit to Inntravel for managing to juggle 5 hotel bookings, with our request for upgrades in some, and all the travel - the one "replacement bus service" on the shortest leg of the journey was well beyond even their abilities to forsee and local arrangements worked very well. Yes, it is a busy few days, but extremely rewarding.

    We loved this train journey - slight customized since we chose to end in Piran instead of Trieste.  Each city had its own character and the travel between them was easy.  Inntravel chose fabulously interesting hotels in perfect locations for exploration.  We enjoyed Rigoletto at the opera house in Vienna, climbed the Schlossberg stairs twice to admire the view from above of Graz, gasped at the blue-green water of the Vintgar Gorge near Lake Bled, dined at Michelin star restaurants in Ljubljana, and walked the sunny walls of Piran on the Adriatic.  So much beauty and so many wonderful memories. Inntravel did it again.

    There is too much travel on this trip. The holiday was bookended by 2 wonderful cities but we were tired at the end and did not feel the journey had been carefully planned at all.

    This year is 25 years since our first Inntravel trip and like us, the holidays have matured. In 1997 we walked over the Jura mountains, this year we travelled by train across Europe through the Habsburg cities. All our journeys have been interesting and rewarding experiences.

    Fascinating trip from an historical point of view.  We did not know about the coffee link and the Habsburgs for instance! Rail travel took the stress out of car hire and driving ourselves. Hotels were well located either near the station or the old quarters. Restaurant recommendations were excellent and the detailed background notes were of the standard we have come to expect from Inntravel and one of the reasons we continue to book with them. Lake Bled was a highlight and not to be missed.

  • Once you’ve decided on your exact itinerary (our travel experts will be happy to offer advice), you need to provide us with your party’s details, either by phone or via our booking form. At this point we also ask you to pay a deposit so that we can secure a room for you immediately on confirming availability with the hotel(s).
