A quintessential country house experience

Even if you are not as distinguished as some of the guests who have spent time at Plas Dinas over the years, it is easy to imagine that you are, such is the attentiveness of the service, the level of comfort, and the calibre of the food. This is the epitome of a British country house, with all the elements you would expect: a secluded setting amid extensive grounds, a sense of history and tradition, and exquisite attention to detail, right down to the old photos and other memorabilia belonging to the Armstrong-Jones family.

Even the atmosphere is just right – you are made to feel like a house guest rather than a hotel guest, free to pour yourself a whisky from the decanter in the drawing room, or to explore at will in the grounds. Add to that a list of accolades including an AA Wine Award for Wales 2024/2025, a nine-course tasting menu that’s featured in the Michelin Guide, and the award for Best Hotel in North Wales since 2021. In short, a stay at Plas Dinas is a very special experience.
If you can bear to tear yourself away, you are within walking distance of Caernarfon Castle, whose elegance and history, while on a completely different scale to those of Plas Dinas, make it a fitting day out. Like your hotel, it too has a connection to Princess Margaret – it was at this impressive fortress-palace that her nephew, Prince Charles, was invested as Prince of Wales amid much pomp and ceremony in 1969.

Itinerary

  • Llanberis to Plas Dinas: 13.5km (8.5 miles), 5hrs; ascent 300m / descent 365m
Today’s walk rewards you with two very different panoramas: first of Snowdon as you ascend out of Llanberis, then, on the subsequent descent, towards the coast. Caernarfon Castle is easily visible on a clear day, giving you a sense of its size, even at this distance, and it is easy to imagine how formidable it must have seemed to would-be attackers in the Middle Ages. The final leg of the walk traverses timeless farmland, sometimes along trails bordered with drystone walls, before finishing with a section that leads parallel to the Welsh Highland Railway to reach your base, the wonderful Plas Dinas, where you can spend the rest of the day relaxing in the sumptuous surroundings.

    Llanberis to Plas Dinas: 13.5km
  • Optional out-and-back route to Caernarfon: 10km (6 miles), 4hrs; 110m ascent/descent
    (If returning by bus: 5km (3 miles), 2hrs; ascent 35m / descent 80m)

Such is Plas Dinas’ appeal that you may well decide not to stray beyond its grounds, and to perhaps treat yourself to afternoon tea in the drawing room.

If, however, you do wish to take advantage of Plas Dinas’ proximity to Caernarfon, then following the Welsh Highland Railway walking and cycling trail to this remarkable town is probably the best way to arrive, giving you the chance to appreciate the superbly preserved castle’s vast proportions as you approach. You will, of course, want to spend plenty of time exploring the fortress-palace to appreciate the medieval military architecture that has earned it UNESCO World Heritage status (it boasts concentric walls within walls, some of which are 18 feet wide) and to learn about its history (Edward I’s son, the first English Prince of Wales, was born here in 1284, and Prince Charles was invested as the current Prince of Wales here in 1969). However, it’s also well worth leaving yourself time to explore the atmospheric town walls and quayside, and to walk a short distance out of the town, along the coast, for views of Anglesey. When you are ready to leave, you can either retrace your steps to Plas Dinas or return by bus or taxi (pay locally).
