Antalya

In 150BC, Attalos II, king of Pergamon, founded this city in what he regarded as 'paradise on earth'. Here, he based a huge fleet and controlled the kingdom, fending off his enemies with help from his Roman Allies. Today, the legacy of centuries of intervention and settlement by myriad cultures can be seen in Antalya’s wealth of architectural treasures, as well as in the gregarious and friendly nature of its cosmopolitan inhabitants.

In the heart of the Old Town, which contains a maze of streets, shops, cafés and bars, we offer a choice of two stylish and characterful hotels. From either base, you can explore this fascinating city and discover both landmark monuments and secluded corners for quiet contemplation. The sea is also just a short walk away for boat trips along the coast – perfect for gaining a different perspective on this jewel of the Turkish Riviera.

Don’t be put off by the fact that Antalya is one of the world’s most visited cities – most of the arrivals are transient, just passing through on their way to beach resorts, or walking destinations inland or along the coast. Spend a little time here and you’ll discover a fascinating city, with a rich and colourful history spanning many centuries and civilisations – from the Greek Hellenistic period and Roman occupation to the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires.

In the Kaleiçi district (‘Old Antalya’), narrow cobbled streets of Ottoman-era houses retain much of their historic character and charm. Everything is centred on Cumhuriyet Square, which is a great meeting place, and a venue for open-air exhibitions and performances.

As you explore, you will also discover archaeological sites relating to Lycian, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Seljuk cultures. Look out for mosques, churches, madrasas (religious schools), masjids (places of worship) and hammams (Turkish baths) in the city; and great monuments old and new, like the magnificent Hadrian’s Gate in the old city wall dedicated to the Emperor Hadrian who visited in 130AD; and the Atatürk memorial in Cumhuriyet Square in memory of the modern country’s founder, Kemal Atatürk.

Wherever you go, the city has a good network of public transport, including dolmuşes (minibuses), and two regular tram services – the first runs from the Antalya Museum and along the main boulevard through the city centre to Hadrian's Gate and Karaalioglu Park; the second serves the airport.

This simple yet tasteful hotel retains the feel of a private house, now restored to its former glory and providing an ideal space in which to relax and escape the bustle of the city. The hotel is decorated in authentic Ottoman style, including the characterful bedrooms with their original wooden floors and doors. Facilities include a bar, restaurant and a courtyard garden filled with jasmine and orange trees.

Once the comfortable mansion of an 18th-century Ottoman officer, the Tuvana is today a stylish and luxurious hotel. Its eight distinct buildings are located on a quiet, traffic-free street in the heart of Antalya’s Old Town, only a short walk from the sea. The hotel has a private pool, sun terrace and a choice of fine eateries – including two high-end restaurants serving traditional Turkish and Ottoman cuisine. The bedrooms are spacious and all elegantly furnished.

A thoroughly enjoyable hiking holiday. Almost tempted to do it again next year but earlier/later in the year to avoid the temperatures we experienced. It was notable from discussions with the hoteliers and taxi drivers that hikers tend to holiday at the end of September or during month of October. WIth the exception of the two 'ultra-marathon' hikers that we met at the first hotel, we only met two more hikers during all the walks and they were camping with much shorter distances to cover between stops.
