Oviedo

After a few days exploring the rugged, green mountains of the Picos de Europa further east, Oviedo comes as something of a surprise. The thriving regional capital, though not huge, feels like a metropolis in comparison to the small stone-built villages in the Picos yet, like the mountains, thankfully remains off the tourist trail.
Oviedo has its fair share of sights, not least the Gothic cathedral, the regional museum of fine arts, the archaeological museum and the pre-Romanesque churches on a nearby hillside, but just as much pleasure is to be had roaming the pedestrianised old quarter, coming by chance upon elegant old palaces and the sculptures of people and animals which are dotted about the pavements.

  • Notes for a self-guided walking tour included
    A visit to Oviedo is, above all, about enjoying the atmosphere of the old quarter, the focal point of our self-guided walking tour, where the steeple of the flamboyant Gothic cathedral – an important stopping point for pilgrims en route to Santiago de Compostela – rises above the tall, painted houses with their narrow wrought-iron balconies.

    In amongst them are numerous arcaded buildings and grand 18th-century mansions with elaborate stone façades, such as the Palacio Velarde, which now serves as the excellent regional museum of fine arts. The city’s other museum, housed in a former convent, is devoted to archaeology, and boasts mosaics and altar stones from some of the pre-Romanesque churches which are unique to Asturias.

    Please note that the two museums are both closed on Mondays.
  • UNESCO-protected churches
    It is possible, if you so wish, to visit the best example of these 9th-century churches, mystical Santa María del Naranco. Along with a second UNESCO-protected church, it perches on a wooded hillside just three kilometres from the city centre. Beautiful in its simplicity, it is the last resting place of King Ramiro I.
