Holiday information

Nice

There’s no denying the distinctly Italian feel of Nice’s architecture and cuisine, and therein lies much of its charm. But Italian isn’t the only influence visible in ‘Nissa la Bella’, as locals refer to their city – the holidaying English and Russian upper classes who spent winters here during the Belle Epoque left their mark too, in the form of the sweeping seafront promenade (the Promenade des Anglais) and the onion-domed Orthodox cathedral.
Much of what attracted northern European aristocrats, not to mention artists such as Matisse and Chagall, is still relevant today – plentiful sunshine, swaying palm trees, the proximity of mountains and sea, the elegance of the Baroque palazzi, the clarity of the light – and is now supplemented by a range of fascinating museums devoted to art, different periods of the city’s history, and more.

Sightseeing

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. You can start on the day of your choice, and are free to add extra nights.
  • Notes for a self-guided walking tour included
One of Nice’s most famous features is the Promenade des Anglais, the seafront walkway named after the aristocratic English collective which commissioned it in the 19th century. It stretches for several kilometres just behind the vast sweep of pebbles, which is divided into 35 beaches, the majority of which are public. A stroll here is a good way to appreciate Nice’s position between the mountains and the sea – as is the Colline du Château, the hill on which the city’s castle once stood, overlooking the jumble of rooftops. At the foot of the hill is Vieux Nice, the old quarter, characterised by narrow, atmospheric streets which offer shade from the strong Mediterranean sun.

Undoubtedly Nice’s most distinctive building is its Russian Orthodox Cathedral, commissioned by Tsar Nicholas II. Complete with gleaming onion domes, it is a somewhat incongruous sight above the swaying palm trees, but is yet another reminder of the era when northern Europe’s upper classes flocked to the city each winter in search of blue skies and warm sunshine.

We provide notes for a self-guided walking tour to help you get the most out of your time in the city.
  • Topics spanning history to photography
There are too many museums* to be able to visit them all, but highlights include the Musée Massena, which examines Nice’s heyday at the end of the 19th century and which is housed in a frescoed, Italianate mansion; the Matisse Museum; the Photography Museum; and the Archaeology Museum, with many finds from the excavations of the city’s Roman baths and amphitheatre (which are themselves open to the public).

*Most museums are closed at least one day a week, in most cases – but not always – Monday and/or Tuesday.
