Holiday information

Madrid

Located at the geographical centre of Spain, Madrid is the country’s main cultural focal point, too, and is filled with that inimitable big-city buzz.

Let our detailed walking tours be your guide and you’ll discover two very different sides to the city: prestigious art galleries housing some of Spain’s most treasured works of art by painters such as El Greco, Velázquez, Dalí and Picasso; and surprisingly traditional districts such as the Barrio de los Austrias, whose charming streets are lined with small shops and tapas bars where you can call in for a drink and plates of cold meats, tortilla, and more.

Sightseeing

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. You can start on the day of your choice, and are free to add extra nights.
  • Famous sights & museums
As you would expect of a capital city, Madrid’s sights are numerous and varied. They range from the impressive Palacio Real (the largest royal palace in western Europe, complete with the royal armoury) to the arcaded Plaza Mayor at the heart of old Hapsburg Madrid; from the Templo de Debod (a 2nd-century-BC temple brought over from Egypt) to the cathedral, whose dome offers unrivalled views over the city; and from El Parque de Buen Retiro (a leafy park with a boating lake) to the famous El Rastro flea market where traders sell all manner of goods each Sunday.

The jewels in Madrid’s crown, however, are the three museums which together make up the ‘Golden Triangle of Art’: the Prado, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and Reina Sofía National Art Museum. The first houses the world’s most comprehensive collection of Spanish painting, with works from the Middle Ages to the 19th century that include masterpieces by Velázquez, El Greco and Goya, among many others. The second is home to paintings spanning seven centuries, while the third is devoted to modern art, of which the highlights are Picasso’s iconic Guernica and works by Dalí and Miró.
  • Notes for three self-guided walking tours included
To help you make the most of your time, we include notes for three self-guided walking tours. One shows you a different side of Madrid by leading you through the Barrio de los Austrias, a surprisingly traditional working district whose delightful streets are lined with small shops and tapas bars. A second trail takes in the three art galleries and the surrounding quarter. Last, but by no means least, is a tapas trail from one authentic bar to the next so that you can enjoy the capital’s culinary delights in traditional fashion.
