Holiday information

Lucca

Often overlooked as visitors head for the more famous cities of Siena, Florence and Pisa, Lucca is a remarkable and captivating city which contains a wealth of medieval and Renaissance architecture and impressive art. Within its medieval ramparts, a reminder of more volatile times, red-tiled houses and ancient churches line narrow cobbled streets that lead to delightful squares, nowhere more so than the Piazza Anfiteatro. As well as its surprising art, the city also boasts fine dining in abundance, cheerful cafes, colourful markets and easy access to the surrounding countryside and coast.

Sightseeing

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. You can start on the day of your choice, and are free to add extra nights.
  • Discover them on foot or by bike
The first thing that you see, and the first feature to demand closer inspection, are the massive ramparts that encircle this fascinating medieval town. Built in four main phases that began during the days of the Roman Empire, they now provide a perfect viewing platform over the heart of the Old Town. Each of the four sides is planted with a different type of tree, making autumn an especially colourful time to visit. Walk or cycle round them to appreciate their size – a wide grassy area separates the Old Town from the surrounding New Town.
  • Notes for a self-guided walking tour included
Our self-guided city walking tour takes you on a leisurely walk round the main sites as well as along quiet back streets to reach bustling squares and secluded corners. Visit the Casa di Puccini, birthplace of composer Giacomo Puccini, and explore the plethora of medieval basilica-form churches, some dating from the 8th century. Other highlights include the cathedral; the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro which covers the site of the Roman arena; the botanical gardens; and the Torre delle Ore ('The Clock Tower').
