Ljubljana

Ljubljana is the vibrant, friendly capital city of Slovenia, located in the heart of Europe at a crossroads for traders and invaders alike. All have left their mark in terms of architecture and culture, in the cuisine and the character of the people. Despite hundreds of years of change, the city has managed to retain traces from all eras of its rich history, including the Roman, Renaissance, Baroque and Art Nouveau periods. The origins of the name 'Ljubljana' are shrouded in mystery – some say it stems from the Old Slavic name of the Ljubljanica River, while a more romantic theory is that it comes from the Slavic ljub meaning 'to love or like'.
Ljubljana is also famed as a city of culture and is home to many museums, galleries and theatres. It boasts one of the oldest philharmonic orchestras in the world, which saw Gustav Mahler as its resident conductor in 1881, while Slovene poet France Prešeren is remembered throughout the city. Today, Ljubljana hosts hundreds of cultural events, including ten world-renowned international festivals.

Sightseeing

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. You can start on the day of your choice, and are free to add extra nights.
  • Explore at your own pace
As you explore, you will be amazed by the variety of architectural styles, from the days of the Roman Empire to more recent Italian Baroque and Art Nouveau buildings constructed after the 1895 earthquake. Take a walk through these historic streets, perhaps crossing the famous Dragon Bridge and strolling along the banks of the Ljubljanica River.

Narrow, winding streets lead to wide squares and St Nicholas’s Cathedral, or up Castle Hill to the 12th-century Ljubljana Castle, for panoramic views over the rooftops. There are plenty of bars and cafés in which to enjoy a glass of beer or one of the superb wines produced in vineyards just outside the city. Grapes have been grown here since Roman times.

One of the most interesting parts of the city to visit is Metelkova Mesto, which began life as a barracks for the Austro-Hungarian army. Nowadays the buildings house art galleries and artists’ studios, intermingled with music venues and night clubs, plus an annexe to the Museum of Modern Art.

All major museums are closed on Mondays.
  • Get about on two wheels
The city operates a bike hire system, 'BicikeLJ', consisting of 300 bikes at 32 stations, never more than 500m apart. You can hire bikes for an hour for free (after registering) and thereafter pay a nominal hourly rate.
  • Ljubljana's environmental credentials
In 2016, Ljubljana became ‘European Green Capital’, an EC initiative awarded annually to promote the efforts of cities in improving the urban environment. The jury was impressed by the significant transformation in sustainability made by Ljubljana over the previous 10-15 years, including local transport, bike priority lanes and pedestrianising the city centre. Progress has also been made in preserving and protecting the green areas which characterise the city and in the revitalisation of brownfield spaces.
