Corfu

The main town of Corfu is one of the most interesting cities in Greece due to the heavy influence of the Venetians who for centuries controlled the island. Like the other Ionian islands, Corfu was never occupied by the Turks, which gives it a character very different from the rest of Greece. However, the island has been influenced by other occupying nations, including the British, Italians, Normans, French, Greeks and Romans, whose ancient buildings are still in evidence at several sites and the excellent archaeological museum.
The wide open Spianada Square – the Platia – which overlooks the old Venetian forts and the sea makes a wonderful place to stroll and get into the rhythms of this fascinating island capital. Take time out to sit at one of the many terrace cafes beneath the arches of the famous Liston building or wander round one of the many museums to gain an insight into the island's rich and varied past.

Sightseeing

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. You can start on the day of your choice, and are free to add extra nights.
  • Notes for a self-guided walking tour included
The historic old quarter of Corfu Town – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – is a delight to explore on foot. The architecture has been influenced by all the western civilisations that once occupied it. Here, you will discover cobbled lanes, broad avenues, piazzas, ornate churches (37 of them!) and thousands of shops, some small (and some even smaller!) selling local art, leather, pottery, copies of icons, olive wood carvings, hand-made lace, silverware and gold jewellery. It's an endlessly fascinating place to potter about, but there is a rich, and occasionally surprising, history to discover, too.

Along the wide Spianada square, one of the largest in Europe, you may be surprised to see a cricket field, a British legacy and the only place in Greece where cricket matches are played.

The field looks out over the Old Fortress, comprising a deep moat, two pentagon-shaped bastions, and a 19th-century church which resembles an ancient Greek temple.

As you follow our walking route through the streets, you will come across references to various British literary luminaries, such as Gerald Durrell and his brother Lawrence, who spent their childhoods on the island; and artist, illustrator and poet Edward Lear who lived in the town for many years.

Look out, too, for the Museum of Asian Art (the only one in Greece); a poignant statue commemorating the 1800 Jews who were transported to Auschwitz in 1944 – most of whom never returned – in Ovriaki, the Jewish Quarter; and, on Agia Sophia Street, a barber's shop belonging to “the only Welsh Barber in Corfu” who will show you the ruins of buildings in the adjacent streets that still show the scars of bomb damage from the Second World War.
  • Mon Repos
Make time to visit Mon Repos Palace – on foot or by taxi – the park of which is a veritable archaeological treasure trove, containing remains of Greek and Ionian temples, while the mansion itself was the birthplace of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Nearby are a Roman bathhouse and Byzantine church, part of Paleopolis, the ancient city of Corfu.

Round off your explorations with dinner at one of the many pavement restaurants, before a stroll along the harbour walls, enjoying views over to mainland Greece and the mountains of Albania – an unforgettable experience.
